1Password is introducing a feature that allows certain AI agents to sign in to user accounts without directly seeing or handling the associated passwords. The company says 1Password for Agents is intended for tasks that require agents to access services while keeping approval for each sign-in with the user.
When an agent reaches a sign-in form, it uses a unique digital key to verify its identity with 1Password. The app then sends the user a notification identifying the account credentials requested and explaining why they are needed. If the user approves the request, 1Password fills in the login information instead of providing the password to the agent. According to the company, approvals take place on the user’s device.
After the agent signs in, 1Password says it can continue its task without having seen the password. Aashish Tripathi, 1Password’s chief product officer, said in a press statement that agents should be able to complete assigned work without receiving permanent access to everything associated with an account.
1Password says the system is designed to work with Meta Muse, ChatGPT Work and Dots, Claude Duet, Grok Bot, and Town. The company also lists Browserbase, Browser Use, Dana, Instinct, Kernel, Perplexity, Ramp, Tomo, and Wajo as partners working toward support, with additional integrations to come.
