Google announced updates to AI Mode and AI Overviews on October 15, saying the changes are intended to make it easier to explore websites and sources from AI-generated Search responses.
The company said it has increased the presence of inline links in its AI experiences and is working to place them higher in responses more often. These links are embedded in words or phrases and let users open related web pages while reading an answer.
Google will also test a dedicated section at the top of some AI Search responses for official websites. According to the company, the section will include context about why each link may be useful, particularly when only one or two official websites are available for a task or specific information.
For news, Google said it is expanding prominent carousels for timely articles to additional locations and languages globally. The carousels can also highlight websites selected through the Preferred Sources feature. Google said the number of people using Preferred Sources has grown by more than seven times since the start of the year.
The company is making links to related articles at the end of some AI responses more prominent, with image thumbnails and a more clickable design. In AI Mode, Google said it began testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results. Those names link to Search profiles intended to provide context about creators and their broader work.
Google said it will continue refining these experiences based on what works best. The announcement does not provide a completion date for the tests or rollouts.
