Google.org says it is providing $2.5 million to support the International Finance Corporation and the broader World Bank Group under the AgriConnect initiative. The stated goal is to help 1 million farmers access livelihood-improving services by the end of 2027.
The funding will support the expansion of digital public infrastructure for agriculture, which Google.org describes as shared digital systems for online services. Following a pilot in India, the World Bank Group plans to build an AI-enabled Open Network for Agriculture, or ONA, across countries in Latin America, Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
According to Google.org, ONA will connect public- and private-sector service providers through a shared digital network. The network is intended to give farmers access through a single platform to services such as digital farmer IDs, credit lines, direct subsidy payments and markets for selling produce.
Google.org also says the network will offer voice-powered advice in local languages covering farming, weather, pricing and finances. The announcement presents the support as part of an alliance between Google and the World Bank Group focused on accelerating digital transformation in emerging markets.
